Court Date and Fair

21 September 2010 | No Comments » | darthtanner

Okay, I apologize for not updating on Friday what happened on Friday, but you know what they say about what happens on Friday. . . maybe not.  We had to go to court on Friday because we have been working on getting guardianship of Sam.  Success.   We went in for our scheduled time, 2:00 pm, and had to wait nearly two hours until we got called up.  We showed up early and listened to the cases that were being held at the time.  There were a lot of no shows, surprisingly.  The Judge, Brady, was hearing a lot of cases involving banks and other businesses.  I guess they had worked out their differences because most of them had no representation present on either side.

So there we sat, waiting and listening.  As I said we showed up early so we heard the business cases for about 15-20 minutes before they called for a short five minute recess.  After the recess is when the judge started hearing the family cases, for conservatorship or guardianship.  It was surprising to me, but it really shouldn’t be, that there were a lot of Mexicans there that didn’t speak English.  Their children had each been in an accident, and they were settling with the insurance company of the other party for x amount of money and the parents had to be declared Conservators of their childrens funds.  They weren’t distant relatives, just the blood mother or parents of the child.

When our turn finally came up, there had been about three or four cases just before us that were also working for guardianship.   One of the families was like us, except the brother-in-law and sister were taking a minor girl out of her fathers home because the father was not providing a safe environment.  That way we got a little look at what would happen to us.  Two hours of sitting, you would think when you finally got up there it would be some big deal.  So we stand up, bring Jessica and Zoe in from out in the hall, go to the stand, introduce ourselves, the judge asks if there is anyone that objects, then just like that he says he will sign the order.  All that waiting for less than five minutes face time in front of the judge.  Meh.

To celebrate we did what the judge had recommended, we got some Ice Cream at Sub Zero.  It is tasty stuff.  So that concludes our Friday anyways.  Saturday we went to the fair.   We had a lot of fun, and had some tasty treats.  We looked at the cows, sheep, and goats.  They have this butter sculpture that someone does every year, and so we saw that.  Mica and Alex, Jessica’s sisters, both worked at the fair this year so we had to go visit them.  Alex got us some deep fried oreos, twinkies, and snickers and boy were they delicious!!  Mica was working in the Jeep  Chrysler section and right by her they had a setup for the Xbox 360 kinect.  That is fun!  Much better than the Wii ever was.  I will have to make a section about that, because this is getting long.

Stake Conference

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Religion

Yesterday was Stake Conference, and I must admit I wasn’t excited.  I have been complaining about not having more personal contact with those that teach in a conference like this one, there were 156 Stakes viewing, but that is something I need to work on.  There were a few things that really touched my mind in that personal way that I was hoping for, so I know Father in Heaven was listening to me complain and threw me a bone.

President Packer shared the story of a time when he was in a meeting with other seminary teachers.  They were asking questions, I can’t quite remember of who, but he asked a question about a certain student in one of his classes.  This student was apparently a little out of control, President Packer said that this students best contribution to class was not coming.  President Packer was sure that when this child was in first grade he would have introduced himself as “Johny Stop.”  So the question President Packer asked, was how long do I have to put up with this student?  How long until we can kick him out of class, and regain control?  Or something like that.  The answer was “What if he were your son?”

This is something that Jessica and I really need to work on.  We can change it just enough to make it very personal, “What if Sam were your son.”  We can technically change it to daughter, and anyone else’s name, but this hits right at home now for us.  We have to learn how to help Sam survive when he has graduated, and help him get to that point, without us killing him.  Patience is one of those virtues we are racking up some experience points with currently.  We will do our best, but if anyone has suggestions, please let us know.  I don’t know about anyone else out there, but being a first time parent, and skipping all of the years up to teenager-hood is a totally new experience for us, and getting used to it will take some time.

Family

We also had my father and grandparents come visit us on Saturday!  That was a lot of fun.  My Dad has been working on helping us find a freezer that we could use, and succeeded in his quest last month.  So on Saturday they brought it up with meat, and other frozen goodies.  He also brought us a shelve system he built so we have a good place for our food storage.  We are already putting stuff in our new freezer, before there wasn’t really room inside to stock up on frozen foods.  We also went to Cafe Rio.  I tell you what, I have never seen Nacho’s like they made them there, but my Grandma got them expecting just a small appetizer sized dish, and instead got a whole meal’s worth.  She left the leftovers with us, so we will get to see what they are like.

Labor Day Weekend

What a weekend!  Sunday we went to two baby blessings, one in West Valley, and the other in Clinton.  They were a lot of fun, and it was nice to get to mingle with Jessica’s family.  Then yesterday we went up to Logan and helped sort through a storage unit filled with Grandma Knights stuff.  Gerald saw all of the things that were just sitting in storage and thought everything would do a lot better being used, so almost everything now has a new home, and the rest will soon be taken to the Deseret Industries to find a home with someone that needs it.

The sorting took a little longer than was planned, so Jessica, Zoe, Sam, and I all got burned a bit.  I feel the worst about poor little Zoe getting burned, but she seemed to be doing fine.  We keep working with Sam to get him to be a harder worker, and he did a good job yesterday.  Even though we went down without any plans to bring anything back, we did end up with a few things.  We now have a very nice leather couch for the middle basement, a desk for Sam to use, and a small grill.  I am excited to use the grill, because I want to perfect my steak cooking skills, also this means we can have barbecues at our house now.

We shall see what today holds, but it will probably be a lot of bug verifying and working to get the automation up to snuff.

One day down, 15 weeks remain.

First class last night for Physics, I am really excited about this class actually.  I am very interested in learning about how electricity is generated, transfered, and used so this class is going to be fun.  We started off by talking about waves, and reviewed properties of a sine wave.  After class I stopped and talked to the professor, Michael J. Leith whom I had for my last physics class as well, about power generators.

He gave me a few pointers, and some general guidelines I need to look at.  I need to get a few materials together so I can really get a handle on what I have learned and document it properly.  The book for this class has a lot of the equations I will need to use so I can calculate what kind of power I might be able to produce.

Well, back to work.

Moving Along

So things are moving along nicely.  Tomorrow school starts, lots of fun.  I will  be taking three History classes, and physics for scientists and engineers two.  I am excited about the physics class, because I will get to learn more about how electricity works.  It is going to be a fun couple of months.

The three history classes are all online so I don’t have to go to class except for Mondays and Wednesdays.  I am hoping that I can do good on these online classes, because it gets easier not to do homework if I don’t have to go into class.  Work is work is work, we are working on a thing called the Portal Merge.  We will be combining two web products into one, the tiwiPro portal and GAIN.  I work for a company called Inthinc.

We sell Telematics solutions, namely for big fleets and some smaller corporations.  I get to test the products for bugs and other issues.  I really lucked out in getting this job.  Today Sam lucked out in the same way, but he made the swim team and not a job.  We both went into our interview/tryout with very little prior experience, and were hired/made the team because we showed the ability to learn.
